Speed Painting - Values and Intro to Color

Hi Everyone,

Here's Week 4's value demo. In this lesson, we explored the basic steps of composition, values, lighting, and dabbled a bit in color. The key from the start of any digital painting, is to work with limited values and colors, and build its complexity as it progresses.

Already just by looking at this piece, I noticed a lot of areas that require more research. Starting with value, the rock formation on the left and its shadow, seem a bit off. The values in the foreground appear too dark, and lack bounce light. The sky, well, there is no sky color, which in my opinion is a problem. The color of the sky dictates the hue of ambient light or bounce light, without it, shaded areas wouldn't have any color - thus make the scene look monochromatic and boring. So my next step would be to figure out what sky color I'd like to have, and apply some of it in the shaded areas. As for solving the shadow of the giant rock formation, left side, I would have to dig up some photo reference that have similar lighting conditions.

Aside from the values, the next steps would be to look for reference material that would cover the rest of the unanswered questions. What do rock the textures look like, what types of vegetation will populate the scene, what does the character and ship look like?

Next Steps for this piece:
- refine values and color
- look for the above reference material
- texture

Lemme know if there are any questions.

Week 2 - Basic Types of Perspecive

These are the 3 basic perspectives that were covered in class. For the 3pt perspective, the vertical lines are not parallel to the vertical edges of the picture plane. Whereas the other two perspectives do have vertical lines parallel to the edges of the picture plane.

Week 2 - Shadow Perspective Demo

Here are some techniques on how to plot shadows. It's really basic but it should give you a general idea on how to incorporated the height angle and the direction of your shadows.
